Some signs point you in the right direction.
Others remind you where you're going.
For this sixth-form project in Slough, Berkshire, we worked with Play Innovation to design, manufacture and install two large illuminated signs that bring a little extra inspiration to the surroundings.
One set against a beautiful exposed brick wall. The other nestled into a lush green feature wall.
Both designed to make a statement.
And both proving that a few carefully chosen words can look pretty spectacular when you light them up.

Creating spaces that inspire.
School signage doesn't have to be limited to classroom numbers, directional arrows and the occasional PLEASE KEEP QUIET.
Although, admittedly, those have their place.
Educational environments are changing, with more consideration being given to how spaces look, feel and influence the people using them.
Working with Play Innovation on this sixth-form project in Slough, we helped introduce two eye-catching illuminated features that do more than simply decorate the walls.
They bring personality, atmosphere and a positive message into the space.
The brief centred around two statements:
YOUR FUTURE STARTS HERE
And
6TH FORM — BELONG • ACHIEVE • SUCCEED
Simple messages with a lot behind them.
Our job was to make them look the part.
Your future starts here. In lights.
The first sign is a large, vertically arranged illuminated statement, positioned against a striking green foliage wall.
Surrounded by natural-looking planting and framed by warm timber-effect slatted panelling, the illuminated lettering creates a beautiful contrast between organic textures and modern signage.
The warm-white glow brings the words forward from the darker greenery, giving the feature wall a real sense of depth.
It's a combination that works particularly well because the sign doesn't have to fight with its surroundings.
The lighting complements the planting.
The greenery frames the lettering.
And the message sits right at the centre of it all.
It's the kind of feature that catches your eye as you walk past.
And probably encourages the occasional photograph too.
A different wall. A different approach.
For the second installation, we moved away from the greenery and embraced something a little more industrial.
Exposed brickwork.
Large illuminated lettering.
And a statement that sums up what sixth-form education is all about.
The 6TH FORM sign sits proudly across the brick wall, with bold, warm-white illuminated lettering creating a strong contrast against the uneven texture of the surface.
Beneath it, the words BELONG • ACHIEVE • SUCCEED reinforce the message in a more understated finish.
Together, they create a focal point that's both welcoming and aspirational.
The surrounding brickwork has plenty of character already, so rather than covering it with panels or printed graphics, the sign allows the original wall to remain part of the design.
Add the planting and subtle lighting below, and the whole area takes on a completely different feel.
A bit of character.
A bit of atmosphere.
And a rather nice place to remind students what they're working towards.
Getting the glow just right.
Illuminated signage can look wonderfully simple when it's finished.
Getting there takes a little more consideration.
With large-format illuminated lettering, everything from the scale and spacing of the typography to the positioning against the background makes a difference.
Too much light and the lettering can overpower its surroundings.
Too little and that lovely feature wall becomes a rather expensive collection of barely visible words.
For these two installations, the warm-white, neon-style lighting provides a clean, consistent appearance while working with two very different architectural finishes.
The clear-backed design of the brick-wall lettering also helps retain the appearance of the original surface behind the sign.
Meanwhile, the vertical layout of the foliage-wall installation gives each line of text its own breathing room.
It's all about balance.
And making sure the final result looks as good switched on as it does when you're standing back admiring the installation.
More than just a sign on the wall.
There's a reason illuminated signs have become popular in modern schools, colleges, universities, gyms, offices and hospitality spaces.
They can completely change how an area feels.
A blank wall becomes a focal point.
An ordinary entrance becomes a memorable first impression.
And a simple phrase becomes something people associate with the space.
For educational settings in particular, inspirational wall signage can help reinforce a school's identity and create a more welcoming environment for students, staff and visitors.
It's also a great way to give communal areas, social spaces and school entrances a little more personality.
Because while a good learning environment needs plenty of practical things, there's no reason it can't look brilliant too.
Two signs. One bright result.
What we particularly like about this project is how differently the two signs work.
The greenery installation feels warm, contemporary and inviting.
The exposed brick installation is bold, confident and full of character.
Different backgrounds.
Different layouts.
The same attention to detail.
Together, they demonstrate how bespoke illuminated lettering can be tailored to its surroundings rather than simply attached to whatever wall happens to be available.
It's a brilliant example of signage becoming part of the environment itself.
And if a sign that says YOUR FUTURE STARTS HERE isn't worth lighting up, we're not quite sure what is.
